There are now less than 100 days to go until the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force.
Employers are reminded to review their data protection and collection policies and consider how data is handled. GDPR, which will take effect on 25 May, will give people greater control over how their personal data is used and provide them with the “right to be forgotten”.
One of the major effects of the GDPR is the need for explicit consent from individuals for the storage of their data. It is recommended that employers look at the personal data they have and justify its purpose. Employers should consider educating and training staff about the risks of poor data security and holding on to data that is no longer relevant. If an organisation is found to be in breach of GDPR after the deadline, it could face a fine of 4% of its annual turnover, or €20m (£17.8m), whichever is greater.
