Acas publishes new guidance ahead of World Cup

03 October 2018

Acas has published guidance for employers on how to manage employees throughout the course the World Cup, which takes place between 14 June -15 July 2018. The guidance advises employers on several issues they may face during the World Cup, including:

Time off - Acas suggests employers offer flexible working options around this period. An employer could consider a more flexible working day, meaning employees may come in a little later or finish earlier, and then agree when this time can be made up. Employers should also acknowledge that in some cases it may be difficult for employees to book time off in advance. Acas also suggests employers allow staff to take their lunch breaks during match times.

Sickness absence - Levels of attendance should be monitored during this period in accordance with the company's attendance policy. Any unauthorised absence or patterns of absence could result in formal proceedings.

Social media- Acas suggests employers remind their employees of their social media policies as there will be an increase in social media use throughout the World Cup.

Drinking or being under the influence at work - some people may like to participate in a drink or two while watching the match or go to the pub to watch a match live. It is important to remember that anyone caught drinking at work or under the influence of alcohol in the workplace could be subject to disciplinary procedures. There may be a clear no alcohol policy at work and employees may need a reminder.
